Iran's 'House of Cartoon' Hosting Anti-ISIS Drawing Competition

An international anti-ISIS drawing competition has been launched by Iran's "House of Cartoon," an art organization that previously gave cash prizes for the best cartoon satirizing the Holocaust. Cartoons that have already been submitted for judging not only mock ISIS but also suggest ties between the terrorist group and the United States and Israel.

According to UK's The Independent, several cultural centers in Tehran are displaying the cartoons before choosing a winner on May 31. Works poured in from nearly 40 countries, including Australia, Brazil, and Indonesia. Out of 800 submissions, 280 have been selected. Cash prizes are said to range between $700 and $1,500.

The head of House of Cartoon, Seyed Masud Shojayi Tabebaei, instructed the artists to focus on the atrocities of ISIS (Daesh in Persia) and its "Western, Arab, and [Jewish] backers." Caricatures of President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are said to be included in the cartoons, along with French President Francois Hollande and Saudi Arabian King Salman.

Cartoonists attending the competition are reported to be traveling under pseudonyms to avoid being targeted by ISIS. One artist said, "Daesh tries to associate itself with Islam but in essence it has no idea about Islam."
